Welcome!

You have entered a website that was created to empower youth to make a difference!

The council has many exciting things to share with you! First, on April 1st, grant requests were due. YGMC received eleven applications that requested more than $16,000. They only had $5,600 to grant out, so they had to be very choosy. The council selected the following six grants to receive money:

Sam McCary ($1,600) To buy a weather station that will be used at Salina South High School to teach students about the weather, our atmosphere, and the environment by providing real time weather information.

K-9 Capers ($1,000) To purchase dog agility equipment to enhance the 4-H dog training program.

Southeast of Saline T.R.U.S.T./S.A.D.D. ($1,000) To fund an "Alternative Day" to raise awareness about underage drinking, drug use, and the importance of wearing a seat belt.

Sacred Heart High School Junior Civitan Club ($800) To fund a senior citizen prom where youth can directly associate with the elderly to break stereotypes in both groups.

Assaria Pride Yardstick Garden ($600) To landscape a new addition to the existing garden that teaches kids about gardening, harvesting, and entreprenuerial skills

Laurel Michel ($600) To start the rebeautification of the courtyard outside of Central High School's cafeteria that will involve art students, industrial design students, and math students working together to complete the project.

Also on April 1st, Youth Citizenship Award nominations were due. The council could choose only one of the ten nominees to honor for their dedication to community service and the betterment of Saline County. The council selected Elissa Stein as the 2008 Youth Citizenship Award Winner. Stein is a senior at Southeast of Saline High School. She has contributed countless hours of service to her community, she is an inspiration to her peers, and she is a selfless, young woman. Congratulations Elissa!

The newest announcement for YGMC is the selection of the 2008-2009 council members. Seven seniors left in May, so the council needed to find replacement members. YGMC received sixteen applications on May 1st. Each applicant was then interviewed by council members. After much debate at a later meeting, the council chose ten new members. This will make the council grow to 20 members next year, our biggest yet! Congratulate the following people for their selection on the council:

Madison Hale (will be a Sophomore at Sacred Heart High School)
